Medical kits and medical training are about to experience a massive enhancement for the entire cove of Northwest Airlines [NWAC], about 400 aircraft. The carrier plans to install automated external defibrillators (AEDs), hand-held electrocardiograph (ECG) monitors, and expanded medical kits containing supplies for strait treatment of heart failure, breathing difficulties, seizures and other medical crises. Initial deployment is slated for the conclusion of this year, with all aircraft to be equipped through the end of 2000.

Flight attendants will receive added training, which is to be complet by dint of the end of the first quarter of 2000 Cabin staff also will be able to receive medical advice via air-ground telephone from the staff of Minnesota's prestigious Mayo Clinic. The program is similar to that of American Airlines [AMR] (see ASW, May 3) which claims it has already saved common life with the AEDs extended on its aircraft.

A Northwest official said there were eight passenger deaths onward the carrier's airplanes last year; half of them appear to have been the eventuate of sudden cardiac arrest (heart attack). As noted in this publication, America's aging population levys more people in the air who are in the age bracket considered the prime window for heart attacks. >> Northwest, tel 612/726-4009 <<
