A malfunctioning thrust reverser does not appear to be the proximate cause of the Egyptair Flight 990 crash (see ASW, Nov. 8) Based forward a preliminary reading of the flight data recorder, the autopilot disconnected about 8 inferiors before the airplane made what Jim Hall, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) described was a abrupt but "controlled descent." The 8-second delay may be attributable to donning crisis oxygen masks and/or cross-cockpit conversation about intentions although, we hasten to add, this is speculative.
"There is no evidence of thrust reverser deployment in the data we have," Chairman Hall declared. As of this writing, investigators have not over and above recovered the cockpit voice recorder.
